The Goblin TarotJust a side project I've been working on for a game idea I had. The aim is a goblin based tarot deck with the suits of Bones, Bugs, Cogs and Tools. The face cards in each suit are the Mob, the Hero, the Avatar and the Lady. The major arcana will be 22 in number, but for a very special reason...only coincidentally matching the 22 major arcana of the rider waite tarot. The goblins believe in elemental forces based around polyhedral forms. The innermost form is a regular tetrahedron, 4 faces, 6 edges - the four faces correspond to anti-suits. If you balance a face on each of the edges of a regular tetrahedron, you end up with a regular hexahedron (AKA a cube). The next six major arcana cards combine a pair of anti-suits to generate an elemental affinity. A cube has 12 edges. If you balance a face on each of the edges of a cube, you end up with a form of dodecahedron with diamond/rhombus faces. These will form the basis of the last 12 major arcana, each combining a pair of elements. If it doesn't make sense, don't worry. Just enjoy the pictures. CommentsThe project has now expanded to the next level.
The deck will be printed shortly, pre-orders are available through... www.indiegogo.com/the-goblin-tarot Thanks for the good wishes. like the designs, interesting explination to the way you have decided to go with the major acarna. I have a 'Celtic Tarot' deck, I wish the designer had put the same level of thought into them, the more common elements used in the tarot don't really mesh with Celtic beliefs so the major acarna is at odds with the actual beliefs of the celts.
Thanks, I've collected a few tarot decks over the years and I'm a bit annoyed at how little thought has gone into them as well.
Even those people who generate up their own major arcana for a specific belief system seem to just throw the familiar tarot archetypes into a cultural paradigm where they don't fit. One of my most disappointing tarot decks was the HR Giger deck, beautifully dark images, but most of them don't really fit the arcana they are designed to represent, because the original images were never designed to be used that way. Thanks for adding me to your watch list. Yw, an am hearing you on the lack of thought on the design of the major acarna, these designers seem to forget that the major acarna was essentially a storybook from a time when very few could read, but everybody can understand a picture book. well they can when the pictures are of things they can relate too.
